Font image generator: turn any text into a picture

Sometimes you do not want text. You want a picture of text: a title for a video thumbnail, a word for a poster, a heading for a Pinterest pin, a name for a logo sketch, or a line to place over a photo. Most apps only let you pick from a handful of built-in fonts and then fight with transparency. This font image generator does the simple thing: you type, you pick a font, and you get a clean image file.

Every font in our directory is available here, so you are not limited to the same few typefaces everyone else uses. Search by name, jump between styles such as script, display and handwriting, or press Random and see what comes up.

How to make a text image in four steps

  1. Type your text. Use Enter for a second line.
  2. Choose a font. Press a style button, use the arrows, or search for a font by name.
  3. Set the look. Pick a colour or type a hex code, add a gradient, an outline or a shadow, and choose a background or tick Transparent.
  4. Press Download to save the file, or Copy picture to paste it straight into a chat or a document.

PNG text with a transparent background

A transparent PNG is the main reason people search for a text graphics generator. With no background, the text can sit on top of anything: a photo, a video frame, a T-shirt mock-up, a slide or a website banner. Tick Transparent and keep the file type on PNG or WebP. The preview shows a grey checkerboard, which is how editors show transparency, and it is not part of your file.

JPG cannot be transparent, so when you pick JPG the background colour is used. JPG files are small and work everywhere, which is handy for quick social posts.

Choosing the right font for the job

Titles and headlines

Bold display and sans-serif fonts read well when they are small. Use a short phrase and a strong colour contrast, such as white text with a dark outline on a busy photo.

Invitations, quotes and greetings

Script and handwriting fonts feel personal. Keep the text short, because long lines of script are hard to read, and avoid very thin strokes on a light background.

Logos and branding sketches

Try several fonts quickly with the arrow buttons and compare. A logo usually needs one confident font, so look for shapes that stay clear when the image is small.

Gaming, tattoo and street style

Blackletter, graffiti and pixel fonts bring character. Our Old English font generator has extra presets for tattoo and gangster styles.

Tips for sharper, better-looking images

  • Check contrast. Dark text on a light background, or the reverse, is easiest to read. Add an outline when the picture behind the text is busy.
  • Use the image size menu to match a platform: square for Instagram, 1280×720 for YouTube, 1200×630 for link previews, 1080×1920 for stories.
  • Choose Extra sharp if you will print the picture or enlarge it. Choose Small file if you only need a quick post.
  • Use letter spacing for short uppercase titles. A little more space makes capitals look polished.
  • Tilt by a few degrees to give a casual, sticker-like feel.

Is it safe to use the images commercially?

The tool itself is free and does not add a watermark. The font is another matter: each font has its own license. Many fonts in the directory allow commercial use, and some are for personal use only. Before you put a picture on something you sell, open the font's page and read its license. This is good practice with any font, anywhere.

Copy and paste a font image

The Copy picture button puts the image on your clipboard, so you can paste it into Google Docs, Word, Canva, Slack, WhatsApp Web and many other apps without saving a file. If your browser does not allow it, use Download instead.

What is the font in a picture?

Many people who search "what the font" have a picture and want to know which typeface it uses. Our font finder from image compares your picture with fonts in the directory and suggests the closest matches, and you can then bring that font here to make your own text image.

Frequently asked questions

Is this font image generator free?

Yes. It is free, has no sign-up and no limit, and adds no watermark. The picture is made in your browser, so the text you type is never sent to our server.

How do I make a PNG with a transparent background?

Tick Transparent, keep the file type on PNG or WebP, and press Download. The grey checkerboard in the preview only shows transparency and is not saved in the file.

Can I copy and paste the font image?

Yes. Press Copy picture and paste it into a document, a chat or a design tool. If your browser blocks it, use Download instead.

Can I use any colour, including my brand colour?

Yes. Pick a preset, use the colour picker, or type a hex code such as #E52809. You can also add a second colour for a gradient and set the background separately.

Which fonts can I use?

Any published font on this site that has Latin letters. Search by name, press a style button, use the arrows, or press Random. Fonts for other languages are best tried on their own font pages.

Can I use the images for commercial work?

The tool adds no restriction, but each font has its own license. Open the font page from the directory and read its license before using the picture on products or in ads.

What size and quality will the image be?

With Fit the text, the image is as large as your text plus the space around it, doubled for sharpness. Choose Extra sharp for print, or pick a ready-made size such as 1280×720 for YouTube. Very large sizes are limited to about 4000 pixels on the longest side.

Why is the image not transparent as a JPG?

JPG does not support transparency. Choose PNG or WebP to keep a transparent background.

How can I find out which font a picture uses?

Use our font finder from image. Upload the picture and it suggests the closest fonts from the directory.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On most phones the Download button saves the picture to your gallery or downloads folder. Very old phones may limit large pictures, so try a smaller size if the file does not save.
